Sustainable Agriculture Academy
Gaining industry specific skills for college and career readiness! The second academy to begin at Sonoma Valley High School, also a National Academy Foundation (NAF) affiliated academy, which includes Career Technical Education classes (CTE) for SVHS students in grades 10-12 who choose agriculture courses as their elective path. The academy combines curriculum on sustainable farming practices in plant and vegetable production; sustainable farming practices in the viticulture industry; and business and marketing of sustainable agriculture products. The program includes hands-on learning and work-based learning opportunities.
The School Garden Program
Learning outside the walls of a traditional classroom! School gardens are used as an outdoor classroom for teaching nutrition, horticulture, science, math, art and simple cooking lessons. The School Garden Program includes lessons on how to grow and harvest vegetables and fruit and monthly visits to each school garden by local chefs who volunteer to teach students how to cook healthy foods grown in the school gardens. The elementary school gardens create a ramp to the middle school horticulture classes, then to the agriculture classes at Sonoma Valley High School.
Engineering, Design & Technology Academy
Connecting student learning to real-world problems and solutions! A comprehensive National Academy Foundation (NAF) affiliated academy, which includes Career Technical Education (CTE) classes for Sonoma Valley High School students in grades 10-12 who choose engineering courses as their elective path. The EDT Academy combines evidence-informed Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum; hands-on learning in designing, engineering, testing, and redesigning of their own project; training on industry standard 3D design software and printing equipment; and work-based learning opportunities to connect student learning to the real world.
Valley Vibes Orchestra
Becoming musicians in a vibrant learning environment! A daily after school music program, two hours each day for students in grades three - middle school and a three day per week, hour-long pre-orchestra program (POP) for kids in kindergarten - second grade. Students in the program learn crucial social-emotional and cognitive skills. They become musicians who play violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone, are responsible to one another and persevere through musical challenges.
Bridge to Algebra
Giving students a boost in math skills and confidence! A summer program designed to support rising 9th grade students who are at risk for failing Algebra 1. The program includes direct math instruction, group problem solving, and individualized support. Students experience lessons based on Stanford professor Jo Boaler’s research and learn to move from a “fixed-mindset” (“I’m either good at math or not”) to a “growth mindset” (“I CAN learn anything and be good at math). Students also receive lessons from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
